We know you have questions, and we have the answers.
Q: Is Oasis a franchise of a large weight loss corporation?
A: No. Oasis is the weight loss medical practice of Dean Sloan, MD, and Diane Katims, RN. We have one location, in beautiful Boynton Beach, Florida. We are quite unique as a medical practice in that we employ the principles of lifestyle medicine for the treatment of the overweight state and its many related medical conditions.
Q: What is "lifestyle medicine?"
A: Lifestyle medicine is the "prescription" of specific lifestyle behaviors for the prevention and treatment of a multitude of common conditions, including the overweight state and its related diseases. Lifestyle behaviors include many activities of daily living, such as eating and exercising.
Q: Isn't weight loss all about the restriction of caloric intake and the increase of caloric output?
A: Not necessarily. The "calories-in-calories-out" recommendation is an oversimplification of a highly complex scenario. Cutting caloric intake often suppresses the metabolism, by triggering the body's "fear" that a famine is imminent, causing the body to favor fat storage over fat burning. In this setting, fat loss will occur only when a starvation state is reached, and, of course, this type of weight loss is unhealthy and unsustainable.
Q: Does Oasis administer HCG? I know several people who lost a lot of weight on this.
A: No! HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone produced in a woman's body during pregnancy. Its pharmaceutical version is approved by the FDA for use as a fertility agent. It is not FDA-approved for weight loss, and, in fact, there are no sound scientific studies that demonstrate it produces weight loss. People taking HCG lose weight because they are following a very low-calorie diet (typically 500 calories per day). This is modified starvation, which, as discussed above, is unhealthy and unsustainable. This type of weight loss is temporary and is generally followed by complete regain.
Q: What about all the "natural" dietary supplements like the products recommended by Dr. Oz that are advertised for weight loss?
A: For years now, countless products have been marketed in this country for weight loss. Nearly 70% of American adults are overweight, and the vast majority of them would love to be able to take a "natural" supplement to lose weight effortlessly and painlessly. This is a huge market for the supplement industry and therefore an opportunity for huge profits, so there is tremendous incentive for the industry to sell products in this class. The truth is not one of the dietary supplements touted to produce weight loss has been scientifically proven to do so. These products are valueless and useless and therefore a complete waste of money. As you probably know, Dr. Oz has recently been heavily criticized by his physician colleagues for his enthusiastic endorsements of these products.
Q: Are there medications that have been scientifically proven to assist with weight loss and are FDA-approved for this purpose?
A: Absolutely. There are actually a number of prescription medications that are FDA-approved for weight loss, some of which have been introduced to market within the last few years. Dr. Sloan is happy to prescribe these medications for patients who are interested in using them, as long as such patients meet the medical criteria for the safe use of these medications.
Q: Does Oasis sell pre-packaged frozen meals to be used as replacements for regular food?
A: No. We sell delicious physician-grade protein products that you may use for snacks or meal replacements if and when you desire, but you are under no obligation to do so. As practitioners of lifestyle medicine, we "prescribe" the daily consumption of regular grocery and restaurant foods. Few people are able to permanently live on pre-packaged meals, so any weight loss achieved with the regular use of these meals is typically temporary. We position our products as an adjunct to our lifestyle recommendations, and, again, they are optional. It just so happens that many of our patients find our products very helpful because they are so tasty and filling.
Q: Who will counsel and guide me at Oasis?
A: Every one of your visits to Oasis will be with either Dr. Sloan or Diane (our RN) in a private one-on-one setting. Dr. Sloan has been exclusively treating the overweight state and its related conditions since 2000, and Diane has as well since she joined Dr. Sloan’s practice in 2004. Together, they have helped almost 6,000 patients lose weight and gain health. For our patients who are interested in a group environment, Dr. Sloan and Diane run a discussion group once a month at the center, free of charge. Here, attendees have the opportunity to share their weight loss challenges and successes with each other and leave feeling even more enlightened and empowered.
Q: How fast will i lose weight and how much will I lose on the Oasis plan?
A: This is the age-old and most frequently asked question. Weight loss businesses that promise a certain number of pounds per week or month are obviously trying to entice you to join their ranks and are not interested in your permanent success. "Thirty pounds in thirty days" and similar claims require the use of extreme weight loss methods that are impossible to sustain long term, so such weight loss is only temporary, followed by complete regain. Permanent weight loss requires the observance of a comprehensive, customized and sustainable lifestyle plan, and the weight loss achieved in this fashion is generally slower than that which occurs with some well-known commercial diets. But, the weight loss achieved with a healthy lifestyle is the only weight loss that makes sense because it is the only weight loss that can be permanent. The rate and extent of weight loss you achieve this way is dependent on so many factors that it cannot be accuratrly predicted, but fortunately it is determined mostly by how completely you observe your lifestlye plan. We fully recognize that living a healthy lifestyle is not particularly popular in our culture, especially when we are eating out, celebrating holidays and social events, traveling, and dealing with stressful situations. It is human nature to deviate from a healthy lifestyle and to do so frequently. It is our job at Oasis to do our very best to help you maintain your healthy lifestyle and ultimately achieve your weight loss goals.
